It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its walled area, which is excellently preserved, has many monuments, palaces and noble houses, most of them built between the 14th and 18th centuries.
On your way to the old town you will go under the Estrella Arch and past the New Tower. The Plaza Mayor, with its arcade, is very beautiful. In the surrounding area you will find the Town Hall, La Paz Shrine, Bujaco Tower and the 12th century Almohad defensive wall. Near here there are beautiful buildings such as the Godoy Palace, Casa de Carvajal, Casa de los Toledo, Church of Santiago and Santa María Pro-cathedral. Opposite the cathedral is the Episcopal Palace and Ovando Palace, and a little further away, the Golfines de Abajo palace. In the higher part you will also find, amongst other monumental buildings, Casa del Sol, Church of San Mateo or Casa de las Veletas, which houses the Cáceres Museum. The museum holds an imposing Moorish water cistern. Another place not to be missed is the Jewish Quarter, situated in the lower part of the historic centre.
