This is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, together with the Palau de la Música Catalana.
The Hospital was founded in 1401, with the merger of six hospitals existing at the time in Barcelona. Many complaints about the management, installations and age of the building were received from the start of the 19th century, also because there was no space to enlarge it, so a new hospital was built at the beginning of the 20 th century, financed by the banker, Pau Gil. Work commenced in 1902 and continued until 1930. The architect, Lluís Domènech I Montaner, one of the main exponents of Catalan Modernism, designed the hospital so that all services were on-site and it was isolated from the city. The project included streets, gardens, running water in the buildings, a church and even a convent. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1977. The hospital departments were transferred to a new building in 2009.
