Basilica of the Reconquest
It is built on the spot where there used to be a 4th century basilica that was destroyed by the Almohads. The actual construction is Romanesque. It belongs to Mérida’s archaeological site, which has the UNESCO World Heritage designation.
It has a basilica ground plan and a semicircular apse inside, and a straight one outside. The apse chapels have Visigothic and Gothic elements. Remains of Roman homes have been found under the floor of the basilica, and also a Christian necropolis.
