The Historical Botanical Garden in the city of Barcelona was extended in 1995 with a new one in on Montjuïc Mountain. This new garden complements the first, by focusing more on medicinal plants and vegetables. It is based on unusual, novel criteria: plants are selected and grouped according to criteria of “Mediterranean-ness”. This means that the garden is structured over 14 hectares with 4,000 species from the world’s five regions with Mediterranean climate: the Mediterranean basin, western California, Central Chile and the southernmost areas of South Africa and Australia.
