This is the oldest Three King's festivity in Catalonia. According to various documents, the origins of this parade go back to the late 19th century.
In Igualada (Barcelona), the Feast of the Three Kings is celebrated with particular affection. Everything starts on 28 December, with the arrival of the Patge Faruk, the ambassador of the Three Kings. The children all gather to welcome him and sing a special song of greeting created specially for the occasion. They also listen carefully to what he has to say, as the Patge Faruk carries two books –one white, one black– where he notes down the names of the children that have been naughty or good. Shortly after on 1 January, the Patge Faruk collects the letters from the children to deliver to Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar.
After a few days' wait January 5 finally arrives, when their Majesties the Three Kings of Orient make their entrance riding on three symbolic carriages: Melchior's represents the Sun, Gaspar's the planets and Balthasar's the Moon. This spectacular parade makes its way through the streets while the pages and attendants throw sweets into the audience and climb up long ladders to the balconies of the houses to deliver the presents. For the children, this is the prelude to what will be the most magical night of the whole year.
