Carmen Calvo. Repose and Dizziness

Carmen Calvo. “Y no he quedado para nadie”, 2006 © Carmen Calvo

Within the framework of the PHotoEspaña 2019 festival, the Pablo Gargallo Museum is holding this exhibition of Carmen Calvo, winner of the National Plastic Arts Award, and one of Spain’s most internationally renowned conceptual artists.

Taking old snapshots from anonymous family albums as a starting point, Carmen Calvo blends photography with other languages to give new meaning laced with humour and irony. The selected images are taken from the period between the 1940s and 1970s, an era of immobility and repression in Spain during which the first women’s liberation movements also began.

The exhibition deals with issues such as family, religion, war, memory, childhood and motherhood, and invites the audience to reconsider what they see at first glance, thus dispelling false myths and breaking social conventions.
