Zuloaga 1870-1945

Ignacio Zuloaga, Portrait of Countess Mathieu de Noailles, 1913. Oil on canvas. 152 x 195.5 cm. Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao presents the first major retrospective of Ignacio Zuloaga, one of the most important painters on the early 20th century international art scene.

This exhibition brings together many of Zuloaga’s most important pieces for the first time. The 95 selected works offer an overview of this essential figure in the world of figurative painting. The exhibition, divided into three major periods of the artist’s life, is a unique opportunity to discover the importance and stature of his artistic production.

Our path through the exhibition shows, for example, works from his youth, painted in Paris in the 1890s; his career as a portrait painter, a genre which Zuloaga would come to dominate; his brilliant aesthetic, between Naturalism and Symbolism, which fascinated the critics and the international public; and the work of his mature period, intimate and full of light, notable for its precise detail.
