Exhibition. A Backward Glance: Giorgio Morandi and the Old Masters

Giorgio Morandi, “Still life (Natura morta)”, 1949. Oil on canvas, 30 x 45 cm. Nahmad Collection © Giorgio Morandi, VEGAP, Bilbao, 2019

The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum pays homage to one of the great 20th-century Italian painters, showing Morandi’s exceptional paintings for the first time alongside a selection of works by his main points of reference from the history of art.

Giorgio Morandi’s still lifes are set apart from other 20th-century figurative art due to their unique intensity, essentialism and timelessness. The exhibition reveals the relationship between the still lifes of the Italian painter and some of the old masters who influenced his work over four decades.

Each gallery analyses Morandi’s pictorial references, highlighting the most notable characteristics he acquired from his predecessors: the theatricality of 17th century Spanish painting, the naturalism of the Italian “Seicento”, and the geometry of the still lifes of the French painter Chardin. This lets us see how Morandi focuses on certain details in the works of the masters he admires, such as El Greco’s flowers, the way Zurbarán builds forms with light, Chardin’s houses of cards, or the details of the compositions by the Bolognese painter Crespi.
