From Van Gogh to Picasso. The Thannhauser legacy

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao exhibits close to fifty works from the biggest figures of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and the early modern masters from the celebrated Thannhauser Collection, which will be on display outside New York for the first time.

Cezánne, Degas, Manet, Picasso and Van Gogh are some of the artists on show in this significant selection of works from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s Thannhauser Collection. The pieces in this collection bring to the fore avant-gardists who sought to liberate art from academic genres at the end of the 19th Century.

With their paintings, these artists explored the fleeting effects of nature and how to represent city transformations at the start of the 20th Century, employing stylistic devices and innovative practices such as fracturing and faceting the picture plane.
