A detailed retrospective of the work of Anni Albers, one of the leading artists of the Bauhaus, a pioneer of fibre art and a key figure in the Black Mountain College.

The exhibition takes us chronologically through Albers’ work - she is well-known as a pioneer of fibre art and a key figure in the redefinition of the artist as a designer. Her aesthetic repertoire was marked by the basic artistic elements (textiles and engraving, in particular) which she used to generate motifs of great subtlety and complexity.

Her art, inspired by pre-Colombian culture and modern industry, was also notable for innovation in the treatment of weaving and in textile printing techniques. The show at the Guggenheim Bilbao presents a large number of 'pictorial weavings' which reveal the formal perfection of Albers’ weave and the adoption of the concerns of modern painting and abstraction in textile work.
