Alberto Giacometti. Retrospective

Alberto Giacometti, “Women In Venice (Femmes de Venise)”, 1956 Plaster and painted plaster, between 108-138 cm high. Giacometti Foundation, Paris © Succession Alberto Giacometti ,VEGAP, Bilbao, 2018

The exhibition combines more than 200 sculptures, paintings and sketches by Giacometti, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

The retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of the rare occasions where you can see the eight “Women of Venice” (Femmes de Venice) plaster sculptures in one place. This is the exceptional collection created by Giacometti for the Venice Biennale in 1956. The exhibition offers a unique perspective of the artist’s 40 years of production, whose work was guided by the premise that our gaze can only be sharpened by reduction.

The exhibition includes works from his youth in the 1920s, moving through the post-cubism and surrealism period, into the return of figurative art in 1935, which marked his creative work for the rest of his life. A display that highlights the extraordinary collection of art and archive material conserved by the Giacometti Foundation in Paris.
