Miró. The white muse

General view of the exhibition “Miró. The white muse”, in the Casa del Sol of the National Sculpture Museum © Museo Nacional de Escultura

The National Sculpture Museum presents in its Casa del Sol headquarters a set of 30 sculptures by Joan Miró, made in plaster for subsequent casting in bronze, which are small “masterpieces”.

It is the first time that most of the plaster models gathered together are exhibited in public, as they were kept in his workshop or remained in different foundries. The pieces cover a long period of Miró’s plastic art, from his initial works to those produced a year before his death. These casts, despite the secondary role they play in the creative process, are a precious material because they help to visualise the development of the work, and possess a mysterious feeling and beauty that turn them into small “masterpieces”.

The pieces are exhibited in the Casa del Sol, which houses century-old plasters and reproductions of Greek and Roman works of the highest quality. In this way, the goddesses, venus and classical fauns are twinned with the volumes and poetic curves of Miró’s imaginary figures, showing the singular contrasts and affinities that may exist in the history of sculpture.
