Raphael´s Vatican Loggias The engravings of the Museum of Valladolid

Raphael´s Vatican Loggias The engravings of the Museum of Valladolid

For the first time, the Museum of Valladolid exhibits this series of Italian engravings, unknown to the general public and which are of great interest due to their rarity in Spanish collections.

Raphael´s team of artists decorated a range of halls in the Vatican during the first quarter of the 16th Century. This décor has been an important reference and has been copied by artists and scholars on many occasions. Towards the end of the 18th Century a group of engravers, architects and draughtsmen undertook the monumental task of recording them and putting them on paper under the title that gives its name to the exhibition “Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano”. The publication was divided into three parts: the interior pilasters, the scenes of the vault with references to the Bible and the external columns. The exhibition is based on 15 great pieces from the interior pilasters, published in 1772.

The pieces exhibited have been recently restored by the Regional Government of Castile and León's Centre for Conservation and Restoration.
