Orestes sarcophagus, 2nd century © Museo Arqueológico Nacional

The National Sculpture Museum explores the work of Alonso Berruguete as an essential artist of the Spanish Renaissance in an exhibition including 70 sculptures, paintings, engravings and drawings.

As well as sculpture, Berruguete also painted, drew, and used architectural resources in his work. The exhibition is organised in five sections: 'The light of Antiquity in Rome', 'Sarcophagi and lessons', 'Under the influence of the Laocoön', 'Drawing water from the source' and 'In the shade of a great shell'. Alongside the exhibition there will be a special programme including concert cycles, lectures and film screenings. Free guided tours will also be available on Sundays at 11.30 am, from 16 July to 29 October.
