Spies: secret services and encrypted messages in the Hispanic Monarchy

Imagen cedida por el Archivo General de Simancas

Some 70 documents feature in this exhibition divided into three areas: the organisation of espionage, spies and encrypted messages.

The General Archive of Simancas, attached to the Ministry of Culture and Sport, has organised this exhibition on the surprising and mysterious world of the intelligence services in the 16th-17th centuries. At this time, espionage was an essential instrument of modern states, closely linked to the rise of the authoritarian monarchy, permanent diplomacy and the political theories that endorse it as Machiavellian and Giovanni Botero's concept of "raison d'État".
