Baltasar Lobo. A modern artist among the classics

View of the exhibition “Baltasar Lobo”. “A modern artist among the classics” including Baltasar Lobo’s sculptures.“La Seine” (bronze, 1975) and “Sur la Plage” (bronze, 1954). National Sculpture Museum, Valladolid © Museo Nacional de Escultura

The National Sculpture Museum is holding this exhibition in its Casa del Sol headquarters, which emphasises the underlying “classic heartbeat” in Baltasar Lobo’s sculptures.

Accompanying the classic works from the National Sculpture Museum's permanent collection in this exhibition are the 35 Baltasar Lobo bronze, marble and plaster sculptures. The sculptor recreated Greek myths in his works, focussing on their most unusual and “anti-classic” features. This exhibition highlights this peculiar aspect of Lobo's work, by establishing a dialogue between his Ledas, centaurs and female torsos, and the figures of Aphrodite, Dionysus and the statues of the Parthenon.

The pieces cover the creative life of the sculptor for Zamora, from his arrival in Paris in 1939 to his final years. Some of these works are on display for the first time.
