Sorolla. Torment and devotion

The large-format painting of "The Burial of Christ"Sorolla. Torment and devotion

The Sorolla Museum in Madrid is exhibiting 46 religious-themed works by Joaquín Sorolla, many of them never before seen by the general public as the artist's religious themes are among his least popular.

The paintings on display belong to the painter's early creative period (between 1880 and 1890). These are scenes of popular religious devotion and helped him to become known among the upper middle-classes thanks to their good reception on the market. In fact, in many cases, these paintings were commissioned by patrons and protectors.

One of the pieces on display is the large-format painting of "The Burial of Christ", of which only three fragments are currently preserved, but which the exhibition presents for the first time as it was on a real scale. Also on display is the watercolour "Study of a monk", dated 1881 and recently acquired by the Sorolla Museum.
