Fra Angelico and the Rise of the Florentine Renaissance

Virgen with Child and two angels or Virgin of the Pomegranate, Guido di Pietro, called Fra Angelico. Tempera on panel, 83 x 59 cm, c. 1426. Prado Museum. Acquired in 2016 (in partnership with the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado)

The Prado Museum analyses the early Renaissance in Florence with special attention to the painter Fra Angelico, one of the leading artists of the period.

The exhibition centres on the Annunciation, the first truly Renaissance altarpiece to be produced in Florence, using the new technique of perspective. As well as this masterpiece, which can now be seen in its original state after its recent restoration, 41 more works by Fra Angelico are also on display, including two paintings which entered the Prado Museum’s collection in 2016: the Virgin of the Pomegranate and the Funeral of Saint Anthony Abbot.

The art of the Florentine painter is accompanied by works by his contemporaries, including Donatello, Ghiberti, Masaccio, Masolino and Filippo Lippi, with a total of 82 pieces in the exhibition.
