The Thyssen Bornemisza Museum brings together a hundred works by the painters Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). This is the first comparative study of these two leading lights of modern art.

Although Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso never met, the French painter’s inventiveness, combining art and advertising, high and low culture, had a powerful impact on the young Picasso. It opened up the new horizons of a pluralist modern society, shaping his concept of art and helping his new creative perception to emerge. The show contains works on subjects which fascinated both artists: portraits on the edge of caricature, people on the margins of society, circus performers, the nocturnal world of cafés, cabarets, and theatres, and the demi-monde of the brothel.
