Exhibition: Sorolla and Fashion

Left: Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, «Under the Awning, Zarauz», 1910, Oil on canvas, 99.1x114.3 cm. Saint Louis Art Museum, San Luis. Right: Day dress, 1904-1908, cotton and lace. Victoria and Albert Museum, Londres

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, in partnership with the Sorolla Museum, presents an exhibition attesting to the influence of clothes and fashion on the work of the Valencian painter.

The show presents around 70 paintings from museums and private collections, in Spain and abroad, together with a selection of dresses and accessories from the period. The pieces, some of which have never been exhibited in public before, clearly show Sorolla’s love of fashion. He expertly reflected changes in style and trends in clothing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works present an extensive catalogue of dresses, jewellery, and accessories, and some magnificent portraits of women, which are a special focus of the exhibition.
