Exhibition: Hands that speak for themselves. 500 years of sign language

Pronunciation, by Carlos Nebreda y López: Theoretical-practical treatise on teaching pronunciation to deaf-mutes), 1870 © BNE 1/6383

This exhibition at the Spanish National Library commemorates the tenth anniversary of the law governing Spanish sign languages and support for communication by the deaf, deaf-blind, and hearing impaired.

The show displays a selection of manuscripts, books, periodicals, photographs and prints presenting the main systems for teaching sign language, some aspects of the history of schools for the deaf in Spain, and the new educational methods emerging in the 20th and 21st centuries. It begins with the oldest extant manuscript on early attempts to educate the deaf, dating from 1550.
