Exhibition: IN LAPIDE DEPICTUM. Italian painting on stone 1530-1555

The Virgin Dolorosa with her Hands apart, TITIAN, Vecellio di Gregorio. Oil painting on marble, 68 x 55 cm | 1.9 cm x 2 cm thick, 1555. Madrid, Prado Museum

The Prado Museum is for the first time staging an exhibition about Italian painting on stone. A one-off exhibition in terms of both the uniqueness of the medium, and its fragility. Consequently, a number of these works are not very widely known.

It brings together a selection of nine paintings on monochrome stone (slate and white marble ) by Italian artists such as Titian, Sebastiano del Piombo, Daniele da Volterra and Leandro Bassano. The selected paintings appear alongside other classical Roman works and natural stone, setting in context the relationship between painting and Natural History, Geology and Archaeology.

The works chosen reflect a consolidation of a new approach to artistic techniques and aesthetic concepts during the early decades of the 16th century, as a desire to create the eternal or achieve different colour techniques by controlling the way light falls on a painting’s surface.
