Exhibition: The donation of Óscar Alzaga Villaamil

Romantic landscape by Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (1817-1870). Oil on canvas (120 x 168.5 cm). 1852. Madrid, Prado Museum Donated by Óscar Alzaga The Prado Museum displays for the first time the paintings added to its collection in March 2017 thanks to a donation by Óscar Alzaga Villaamil

The seven paintings cover a wide range of dates, from the 16th to the mid-19th century. The artists were Italian, Spanish, and Bohemian, and all but one were painted in Spain.

The donation includes six works which were part of the Alzaga Villaamil collection: “Allegory of Redemption” by Jacopo Ligozzi, “St. John the Baptist” by Anton Raphael Mengs, “St. Ildefonso receiving the Chasuble” by Juan Sánchez Cotán, the “Immaculate Conception” by Antonio del Castillo, “St. Jerome” by Francisco de Herrera el Viejo, and “Romantic landscape” by Eugenio Lucas Velázquez.

The seventh work, a portrait of “Manuela Isidra Téllez-Girón, future Duchess of Abrantes”, by Agustín Esteve, was acquired thanks to a financial gift included in the donation.
