Exhibition: The Spirit of Painting. Cai Guo-Qiang at the Prado

Cai Guo-Qiang © Javier Molina

The multifaceted Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang (Quanzhou, 1957) has temporarily taken over the Salón de Reinos at the Prado to work on paintings which can be seen in the Jerónimos building.

The works will be inspired by the relationship between the old building of the Palacio del Buen Retiro and the master painters of the museum. The main piece in the exhibition will be “The Spirit of Painting” and will be about 20 metres wide.
A declared admirer of El Greco, in 2009 Cai Guo-Qiang made a journey in his honour from Crete to Toledo. In his gunpowder explosions on canvas, the artist fusions his initial vocation for painting with a more recent focus on performance art, including authorship of the fireworks event in the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
