“Empower Parents” is an initiative for families with children aged 5 to 12 with ASD (autism spectrum disorder), intended to make museums more open, accessible and inclusive for autistic children.
The "Empower Parents" cultural mediation project is promoted by the ICO Foundation/ICO Museum and the EMPOWER organisation. The programme is working to develop an appropriate methodology and tools to facilitate access to museums and cultural spaces for people with ASD, so they can normalise this type of cultural visits in their leisure habits. It seeks to reinforce the leadership and central role of the parents of autistic children, providing them with appropriate materials and resources.
The Empower Parents programme is implemented on a permanent basis at each of the participating cultural institutions, with sessions, activities and workshops once a month (usually on Saturday or Sunday morning), from the start of the programme in October until its completion in June. Interested families must previously submit their registration request to each annual call of the corresponding institution. The forms are usually available on the websites of the spaces and centres that make up the network. At the moment, these are:
