The Sleep of Reason. The shadow of Goya in contemporary art

The exhibition explores the influence of Goya on today’s contemporary art through the works of artists including Darío Villalba, Carmen Calvo, Antoni Muntadas and Daniel Canogar.

Goya’s iconic paintings and etchings, such as “Disasters of War”, the Black Paintings, the “Caprichos” and the “Disparates” are referenced, sometimes directly, sometimes obliquely, by different artists in works ranging from the 1960s to the present. Equipo Crónica, Darío Villalba, Eva Lootz, Antoni Muntadas, Simon Edmondson and William Kentridge are a few of the artists on show.

This multidisciplinary exhibition ranges from painting and sculpture to photography, prints, installations and audiovisual works. Some of the pieces rework specific works by Goya, while others may reveal a “Goyesco” influence in their style without alluding directly to any of his paintings or etchings.
