2019-2020 season at the Teatro Real. Iris, by Pietro Mascagni

Pietro Mascagni’s opera comes to the Teatro Real for the first time as a brutal reminder that despite being conceived in the late 19th century is still a reality: sexual violence and the shadow of guilt upon the victim.

Set in Tokyo, the Oriental harmonies of the score do not distract from the drama of the event which starts the action: the rape of a child. The main character of “Iris” is kidnapped and held in a brothel. After she is set free her family repudiates her and she can no longer go home. Conducted by Evelino Pidó, the title role relies on the dramatic skills of Ermonela Jaho (“Madame Butterfly”, “La Traviata”), one of the most applauded singers in the recent history of the Real.
