2017-2018 season at the Teatro Real. Carmen, by Georges Bizet

Carmen © Vincent Pontet / Opéra national de Paris

The Teatro Real revives the famous opera by Bizet in a production directed by Calixto Bieito and conducted by Marc Piollet.

Since its 1875 debut, “Carmen” has become one of the most-frequently staged operas in history, legendary in itself and a source of inspiration for film, dance and painting. Bieito’s staging places the action in 1970s Seville, using minimalist scenery to represent the city’s underworld, and highlighting the passions expressed on the stage. The result is a story of the battle of the sexes, violence and marginalisation.
