Lecture series: 'Becoming Guernica. Readings on War, Exile and Iconoclasm'

Scholars from different fields of knowledge, including political theory, history of art, and psychoanalysis, are invited to reflect on the timeless yet contemporary relevance of Picasso’s Guernica.

The series of lectures 'Becoming Guernica. Readings on War, Exile and Iconoclasm' hopes to provide fresh perspectives on Picasso’s work and encourage a debate that will help to sketch out interpretations to challenge the generally accepted meaning. Each monthly lecture will approach Guernica from a different discipline.

Subjects will include the relationship between war, representation, and the female body; the connection between the public space, conflict, and politics; the role of Guernica in the literary networks of Republican exiles after the Spanish Civil War; the links between the work and activist artists in 1970s New York; the successive destructions and iconoclasm of Guernica as a symbol; and finally, the current construction of the contemporary war machine.
