Blessed, Damned and Wicked! Thousands of years of comic strips at the National Library

El gato con botas LE CHAT BOTTÉ. Anonymous French 19th century. 1860. INVENT/17767. BNE © Biblioteca Nacional de España

A form of communicating with images, text and a specific structure. This exhibition at the Spanish National Library (BNE) draws a line connecting the first documents in history with the comic strips of modern times.

The BNE takes a look at comics with this playful interpretation that turns thousands of years of history into comic strips. The exhibition focuses on three concepts: Blessed, Damned and Wicked, which evoke several centuries of graphic communication. It starts with the Blessed, the ancestors that created manuscripts and told stories of bandaging mummies in comic strips. It continues with the Damned, the pioneers who developed graphic pages in the media with lithographs and the creation of photographs in the 19th century. And it ends with the Wicked, which refers to the characters of the famous building at “13, Rue del Percebe” created by Fracisco Ibánez, to learn about the vast universe of modern comics.
