Exhibition: Balthus

Balthus, “Thérèse Dreaming”, 1938. Oil on canvas, 149.9 x 129.5 cm, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection, 1998 © Balthus, 2019

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum presents a retrospective of French artist Balthus, considered one of the greatest masters of the 20th century.

The exhibition brings together 47 pieces, mainly large format paintings, and covers all the stages of the artistic career of Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus, from the 1920s onwards. The selection includes some of his most important works, for example, “Cathy Dressing”, “The Blanchard Children”, “Thérèse Dreaming” and “The Street”, which can be seen for the first time ever in Spain.

The French artist followed a path which differed to the development of the avant-garde, producing a figurative and unique style that is hard to label. Using a pictorial language that combines methods of the old masters with aspects of surrealism, Balthus’ works are full of contradictions, inviting the viewer to be a part of each scene.
