Exhibition: Art and Nature in Prehistory. The replica collection

El Tajo de las Figuras, Laguna de la Janda (Cádiz). Juan Cabré Aguiló, 1911 © National Museum of Natural Sciences-CSIC

Thanks to the work of the Palaeontology and Prehistory Research Commission, the Museum of Altamira is showing a selection of replicas and prints reproducing scenes and figures painted in Spain’s prehistoric caves.

One of the core tasks of the commission, created in the early 20th century, was to produce paper copies of cave paintings, given the precarious state of conservation of many of them. The exhibition also showcases the work of artists like Juan Cabré Aguiló and Francisco Benítez Mellado. The reproductions are of art from the caves of Altamira; El Castillo, in Cantabria; El Pindal, La Peña, El Buxu and Peña Tú, in Asturias; and from the collective UNESCO World Heritage site of the Iberian Mediterranean Basin.
