Lebaniego Jubilee Year 2017

Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana

Have you heard of the Lebaniego Way? It’s one of the great Christian pilgrimages, it takes place in northern Spain (in the Cantabria region). Now is a fantastic time to discover it, because in 2017 it will celebrate one of the 7 perpetual saints in the whole world.

The Lebaniego Way’s destination is the Monastery of Santo Toribio, in the Liébana region (Cantabria) and during the celebration of the Jubilee Year it will welcome thousands of people looking to be granted the jubilee (a plenary and universal indulgence bestowed by the Pope on these occasions). For the Jubilee Year, during 2017 religious, cultural, gastronomic and leisure activities will take place, which will make visiting this region of Spain even more interesting.

To make the most of your visit, here are a few recommendations:

Cultural essentials: about an hour and a half away by car you’ll find Altamira “The Sistine Chapel of Rock Art”, which you can discover through the Altamira National Museum and Research Centre in Santillana del Mar. We also recommend you visit the Modernist town of Comillas, where you’ll discover the surprising “Capricho” by Gaudí.

Nature: is almost the Cantabria region’s hallmark. Its extensive green Pas Region Valleys, the spectacular Picos de Europa National Park and its extraordinary beaches at the foot of cliffs adjoining forests are good examples.

Gastronomy: you mustn’t leave without having sampled the robust “cocido lebaniego” (chickpea stew), the renowned Cantabrian cheeses, cold meats such as the chorizo, or the Liébana black pudding and pastries that will make you want to come back for more, such as the quesadas and the sobaos.

Nearby locations: stately Santander, seaside San Vicente de la Barquera or enchanting Potes are good recommendations.

Tips: if you’re interested in doing the Lebaniego Way, bear in mind that it’s signposted with a red arrow. It’s recommended to complete it in three stages (about 70 kilometres that connect San Vicente de la Barquera with the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana) and you can earn the Lebaniega, a certificate which recognises you as a pilgrim.
