The Meaning of Sculpture

Robert Smithson. Pierced Spiral, 1973. IVAM, Institut Valencià d_Art Modern, Generalitat. VEGAP, 2021

The Fundació Joan Miró is exploring the evolution of contemporary sculpture to show how it has moved beyond mere representation and the generation of images and how it has been transformed by new techniques.

The exhibition includes around 100 works by artists such as Julio González, Antoni Gaudí, Joan Miró, Lygia Clark and Robert Smithson, among others. It covers works from the pre-modern era to the present, although with greater attention to the period starting in the 20th century. In addition, there are some ancient or unnamed works that demonstrate the connection of modern sculpture with the old. The exhibition raises topics such as the copying and representation of reality, experimentation with materials, the relationship between object and subject, the connection between sculpture and time, the representation of the human figure and the manifestation of complex emotions, such as sexual desire.
