Carrie Mae Weems. A Great Turn in the Possible

Carrie Mae Weems: 'The Edge of Time. Ancient Rome' from the series Roaming, 2006; and 'Could you shut the door?', 2019. Digital chromogenic printing. A review of the entire back catalogue by this North American multidisciplinary artist, who was ahead of her time and is known primarily for her photographic work.

The work of Carrie Mae Weems (Oregon, 1953), although focused on photography, exceeds the limits of the medium and ranges from performances to videos and installations. The exhibition covers her series chronologically and thematically. Issues such as power, race, violence, politics and gender are addressed from a narrative rather than a documentary perspective. Her images express criticism of the system or artistic practice, transcend the specific, establish a dialogue with numerous communities and project a tireless feeling of hope for the future.

The exhibition is open simultaneously at MAPFRE Foundation's KBr Photography Centre and at the head office of the Foto Colectania Foundation, featuring two important series by Weems and a selection of video works. On the occasion of the exhibition, the MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona) will host the artist's installation "Lincoln, Lonnie, and Me".
