Exhibition: Games and Toys in Augusta Emerita

© Museo Nacional de Arte Romano

The National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida has an exhibition in its temporary gallery of the games of ancient Rome. As well as reproductions of toys from the period, the show explores their meaning and the archaeological context in which they were found.

There are also four sub-sections: 'Playing knucklebones', explaining the many uses of these simple objects; the curious intellectual game of the 'Seven Sages'; 'Board games beyond Roman Mérida', and 'The Oscillum: half toy, half sculpture', presenting a strange object which the Romans played with.
