Exhibition: Iran. Cradle of Civilisations

Stone relief sculpture, Achaemenid period, 559-331 BCE, Persepolis, Fars. National Museum of Iran

The Archaeology Museum of Alicante covers the history of Persia from the Paleolithic to the 18th century in this exhibition of nearly 200 objects from the National Museum of Iran.

Thousand-year-old ceramics, historical inscriptions, reliefs and sculptures, gold and jewels… Objects which reflect the cultural importance of the history of Iran, a vast territory and the birthplace of processes, civilisations and empires whose influence stretched over parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. The exhibition includes an audiovisual presentation and is divided into three chronological sections.

The first, on the Paleolithic and Bronze Age, shows outstanding items like clay tablets with the first cuneiform writing, a bone flute from 6,200 BCE, and decorated Neolithic ceramics. The second includes one of the most spectacular rooms in the exhibition, devoted to Persepolis and its stone relief sculptures. The third, centred on the late Persian empire and its aftermath, presents such objects as a valuable 16th century Quran, and beautiful ceramics and goldsmith’s work from the workshops of Isfahan.
