Exhibition: Miguel Trillo. Afluencias. Costa Este - Costa Oeste

View of the exhibition “Afluencias. Costa Este - Costa Oeste” by Miguel Trillo Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets, Archives and Libraries, of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport

The Centro Cultural Montehermoso in Vitoria-Gasteiz is showing 200 photographs by the documentary photographer Miguel Trillo, a specialist in portraying youth subcultures and underground movements around the world.

The exhibition “Afluencias. Costa Este - Costa Oeste” (Crowds. East Coast - West Coast) shows the series of colour photos taken by Trillo recently in the United States (New York and Los Angeles), and in places which are supposedly the polar opposite to American society, such as Vietnam and Morocco. It also includes a selection of black and white photos from the 1980s, many of which have never been shown before, from the outskirts of Madrid during the counterculture movement of La Movida.

Miguel Trillo is considered an atypical documentary photographer, and since the 1970s his work has focused on depicting the new youth aesthetics of so-called urban tribes. While in his earlier career Trillo concentrated on Spain as it was transformed, he began to look further afield in the 90s, capturing the modernity and the turf wars of groups of young people in the Caribbean and the Philippines.
