Prehistory
Before they disappeared forever, the dinosaurs also roamed our country, leaving prints and other fossil remains which are brought to light at regular intervals. Millions of years later, our first ancestors trod these same landscapes, as can be seen by a Neanderthal skull discovered in Gibraltar, among other remains, and the major findings at the Atapuerca archaeological site, including the discovery of a new and extremely old species: Homo Antecessor. Only slightly nearer the present, the upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic eras were periods which saw the flourishing of rock art and its two main schools: Franco-Cantabrian and Levantine art.
