" The 20th century brought with it a modern aesthetic movement bent on overcoming the academic approach of the 19th century. Freedom and sensitivity were the driving force behind this movement."

This is not strictly speaking an artistic or literary style, but more a reaction which emerges in the aesthetic field as a passionate defence of free artistic creation. From Catalonia, and under the protection of the master Gaudí, a group of creators was to revolutionise architecture as it had been hitherto understood. In interiors, the delicacy of art déco and art nouveau would infuse the decorative arts. And from distant Nicaragua the work of Rubén Darío was to profoundly reinvigorate the world of poetry and literature of the time, foreshadowing the avant-garde movements of the near future.
