A glow in the depths of a cave. The country's first settlers have arrived to reclaim their space from nature. Before the appearance of Homo Sapiens, prehistoric migrations brought Neanderthal, Cro-Magnon and other species of the Homo genus to Spain, including the Homo Antecessor who inhabited the magnificent site of Gran Dolina at Atapuerca. Over time, the two first definite artistic styles came into being: all along the coastline of Cantabria, the rock paintings of the Franco-Cantabrian style, symbolised by the magnificent bison of Altamira; and in Mediterranean areas, the stylised and schematic paintings characteristic of Levantine art.
