San Sebastián is the European Capital of Culture 2016
A year of cultural activities under the heading “Culture for coexistence”. This is how San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa, Basque Country) celebrates being the 2016 European Capital of Culture, a distinction it shares with the Polish city of Breslau.
The programme revolves around the idea of culture as a tool to improve harmonious coexistence and encourage dialogue and cultural innovation in Europe. In view of this, the activities are mainly geared towards participation and are aimed at bringing culture out into the streets.
A cultural 2016 that follows the beam of three lighthouses: the lighthouse of peace, which features ideas that foster respect between peoples and the values of harmonious coexistence inside and outside borders; the lighthouse of life, with initiatives to soothe the stress and frantic pace of urban life and help humanise our daily existence; and the lighthouse of voices, which aims to be a mouthpiece for disciplines like film, theatre, literature and the plastic arts and their capacity to inspire emotion. And all infused with the spirit of exchange and participation.
Waves of energy for participation
San Sebastián 2016 launches a programme of financial aid to encourage non-profit initiatives by private citizens and organisations. Projects will be selected each month to receive a grant of €2016.
