The National Drama Centre uses this theatre, and the Valle-Inclán Theatre, to pursue its activities.
From its opening in 1885, it was called the Princesa Theatre (Queen María Cristina and the dethroned Isabella II attended the first performance), until it was acquired by the actress María Guerrero and her husband in 1908. After undergoing various changes, in 1978 it became the home of the National Drama Centre, under the management of Adolfo Marsillach. It has a second space, called Sala de la Princesa, which is used for small format shows.
Since its creation, the National Drama Centre, to which the theatre belongs, has put on more than 300 plays by important Spanish dramatists, such as Valle-Inclán, García Lorca and Buero Vallejo, as well as plays by major international figures.
