The Tabalacera building, the old Tobacco Factory of Madrid, is currently a cultural centre that holds temporary exhibitions and activities on photography, contemporary art and the visual arts.
The building was built between 1780 and 1792 for the Royal Brandy and Playing Card Factory. In 1809 it was turned into a Tobacco and Snuff Factory, working as such until the end of the 20th century. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport took over in 2003 and has been managing it since then. The facilities are currently divided into two different spaces: Tabacalera, Art Promotion space, with a permanent programme including temporary exhibitions; and the La Tabacalera de Lavapiés self-managed social centre.
