Declared part of the European Heritage network, its name is linked to some of the key Spanish figures of the 20th century such as Dalí, Lorca, Buñuel and Severo Ochoa.

Since its foundation in 1910 and until 1936, the Residencia de Estudiantes (Students' Residence) was one of the liveliest and most open-minded cultural centres in the inter-war period. Its aim was to complement the university lectures, to create an atmosphere of conviviality and intellectual exchange, and to foster a permanent dialogue between the arts and sciences.

It gradually evolved into a forum for debate and the dissemination of ideas, for modernity and the European avant-garde movements, and was much frequented by figures of national and international prestige. Unamuno, Ortega y Gasset, Manuel de Falla, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Le Corbusier and Paul Valéry, amongst others, were some of the intellectuals who stayed here.

From 1986 onwards the centre recovered this tradition and is now an international meeting point, open to debate and reflection. All kinds of activities on current trends take place at the Residencia de Estudiantes, including courses, conferences, concerts, exhibitions, talks, poetry readings, etc.
