A symbol of the city of Barcelona. As well as being an opera house, it is an important cultural and artistic centre.
The Gran Liceu Theatre opened in 1847. However, the current building, which was rebuilt following a fire in 1994, was opened to the public on 7 October 1999. Nevertheless, the Theatre’s central façade on La Rambla Avenue, its main lobby and the Mirror Room all remain from the original building.
It basic purpose is the dissemination and creation of works of art that have music as their main element. Following these guidelines, its artistic programme aims to present a complete panorama of opera, including works by internationally renowned figures and by new composers. The Liceu also offers a wide range of productions aimed at family and child audiences.
