Carballiño (O), Carballiño, O
Ourense, Galicia

O Carballiño is a town situated in the far northwest of the province of Ourense, crossed by the course of the river Arenteiro. An area inhabited since the Neolithic period, it was during the Middle Ages, when the Cistercian monks of Oseira settled here, that the region's economic development began.

A genuine symbol of the city, the Temple of Veracruz, the work of the architect Antonio Palacios, is a splendid example of contemporary architecture. A harmonious blend of the Byzantine, pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic styles can be appreciated in the building's design. Other points of interest are the hill-fort remains of San Cibrán de Las, the Galician country house of the Quiroga family and Santa Baia de Banga, a Romanesque gem which houses beautiful multi-coloured mural paintings (16th century).

One of the main tourist attractions of O Carballiño is the fact that it is a spa town. The thermal springs, which were discovered during Roman times, have their two main points of reference in the Caldas de Partovia and the Gran Balneario. The river Arenteiro, meanwhile, groups together large recreational zones such as the riverbank beaches of Cuco and the Fish-farm or the Municipal Park.

The area surrounding the town is of high ecological and scenic value, with a great many tracts of indigenous forest. In the south of the area, it is possible to see the peculiar cultivation of the terraced vineyards which produce the much-appreciated Ribeiro wines. Lastly, in the neighbouring area of San Cristovo de Cea stands the tremendous Monastery of Oseira (12th century).
