Lluís Pasqual
Carrer Montseny, 47
Barcelona, Catalonia

A top-flight scenic reference that began as a cooperative and is presently a private foundation. It has performed a long list of shows (some of the most emblematic in the history of Catalan theatre). It was one of the founders of the Union of the Theatres of Europe.

It started out in 1976 with fifteen people from independent theatre. This group included Fabià Puigserver, Lluís Pasqual, Pere Planella and Carlota Soldevilla. It offered Catalan theatre “as a normal event” and chose an international classic and contemporary repertoire. At the same time, it also offered a new way of understanding performing spaces where audience proximity would set a new style of theatre.

In 1985, it created the Teatre Lliure Chamber Orchestra dedicated to contemporary music. It has staged its own shows and co-productions which have maintained its presence on large stages and at events around the world, including all other performing arts such as dance and music. Its programme has also included regular presence of two historic resident companies: Gelabert Azzopardi and Carles Santos.
It owns several performance spaces for its production and organises talks, exhibitions and international tours.
