Representación de «Aida», de Verdi, en el Teatro Real © Javier del Real / Teatro Real

The Teatro Real in Madrid features great shows. With a season spanning five centuries of opera, it has room for everything from the most popular titles to contemporary works. It is also offering other artistic and musical productions, as well as activities directed at children and young people.

The 2022-2023 season of the Teatro Real presents 18 operas, from a wide variety of periods and styles. A programme made up of eight new co-productions, two revivals, two guest productions, four in a concert version and two in a semi-staged version.

The new season will open with the premiere of Philip Glass' "Orphée" at the Teatros del Canal on 21 September. A stage that will host two other operas: "Diàleges de Tirant i Carmesina", by Joan Magrané, and "Dido and Aeneas" by Henry Purcell. Due to the renovation works of its stage box, the official opening at the Teatro Real will be on 24 October with the revival of the spectacular "Aida", by Giuseppe Verdi.

Its productions include "La sonnambula", "Arabella", "Achille in Sciro", "Nixon in China", "The Nose" and "Il Turco in Italia". In the concert version, you can enjoy "El retablo de Maese Pedro" (Master Peter's Puppet Show), directed by Pablo Heras-Casado, "Ptolemy, King of Egypt", "Orfeo ed Eurídice" and "Coronis" (a recovered zarzuela piece of Spanish heritage). The semi-staged performances will be "Tristan and Isolde" and "Anti-formalist Rayok".

The schedule will be completed with recitals, concerts, and dance performances. Likewise, Teatro Real will resume "El Real Junior", aimed at children and young people, and family workshops in the Gayarre room.

Alongside the schedule of operas there will be exhibitions, round tables, and lectures exploring the connections between opera and other artistic disciplines, such as literature, film, photography, and so on.
