" Philosopher, physician and poet. Together with ibn Nagrella, one of the most inspirational poets of Sephardic Spain.

He was born in Tudela (Navarre) circa 1070. As a young man he travelled to Cordoba and Granada, where Mose ibn Ezra held an important position. The political upheaval of al-Ándalus forced him to return to Christian territory. He worked as a physician in Toledo, where he was a protégé of Yosef ibn Ferrusel, “Cidellus”, an official of Alfonso VI. In 1140 he left Spain and took up residence in Palestine. His poetic work, entirely in Hebrew, is very abundant. He is the author of moaxajas and secular kharjas, and of geulot and ahabot based on religious themes, of which his “Himno de la Creación” (Creation Hymn) is the most outstanding. He created the religious poetic genre of the Sionides. In Arabic he wrote “Al-Kuzari “(book on the proof and demonstration in defence of the scorned religion). He died in Jerusalem circa 1140.
